Dinner,  things to eat

Visiting MUN: High-End-Asian-Fusion Dining in Haidhausen

Upon first walking into MUN, you are confronted with a plush chair and a darkened staircase. It’s almost as if the world were saying: take a moment; take a seat; take a breath; and when you’re ready, descend. It’s certainly an odd feeling to walk through a door and not know where you’re going, but at the stairs end, whatever that flash of unease you might have felt promptly dissipates.

The intimate basement space is styled with modern simplicity. Exposed wood and grass features revitalize the dark room and provide an elemental contrast to the sleek, black furnishings. Often, you’ll catch the chef standing at the threshold between the kitchen and dining room as if to take in the effects of his culinary creations. If you’re lucky you’ll get to meet him. Chef Mun Kim has a contagious aura of kind-heartedness and an endearingly subtle charm. It’s clear that he loves crafting and sharing his culinary vision, and he encourages diners to feel like guests at his home.

Trained as a sushi chef, one always finds the chef’s specialty on the menu. The exquisitely refreshing raw fish varieties at MUN come paired with perfectly cooked rice and a delicious homemade soy sauce. In my opinion, the sushi in and of itself would be enough to return to MUN over and again, but this location has much more to offer. In order to encompass the chef’s modern fusion vision, diners are also indulged with Korean-, American-, and even Argentinian-inspired dishes, which speak to the chef’s roots and travels.

If I had to, I’d rank MUN among my top favorite culinary splurges. The ever-changing menu is expertly crafted, and the service is always friendly and warm. MUN offers two tasting menus with either four or six courses. Guests can also choose between a meal centered on fish or one including other meats, such as duck or beef. Prices range from 75€ to 95€ (without a wine pairing). Personal highlights from previous visits include the spicy tuna on crispy rice, black rice with beef, and the tuna tartar with wonton crisps.

So, if you dare journey down the long steps to MUN, be prepared for a lingering evening enveloped in the dark folds of this contemporary space. Make sure to carve out a couple hours for good friends, great food, and an exceptional culinary journey. There’s no rush here. So, take seat, enjoy the company and let your taste buds exult.

As always, let me know if you make it to MUN. Also, do you have a favorite fusion restaurant inside or outside of Munich?
