CLOSED- Heimatliebe: Allrounder Café Hidden in Obergiesing

Heimatliebe has since closed it’s doors and everyone’s heart is properly broken.
In it’s place you can find Morelli. They have pizza, pinza and a fairly decent panzanella (if that’s your thing).

Heimatliebe in Obergiesing is a prime example of why you should appreciate those moments when you somehow end up on the wrong side-street. In fact, I’m fairly certain that if you look up “happy accident” in the encyclopedia, you’ll find a picture of Heimatliebe’s compact, rustic elegance.

Latte Macchiato / Ingwer Tee

On the corner of Raintaler Straße and Wirtstraße, I first encountered this very well-hidden treasure while heading nowhere remotely near it. Strolling up Wirtstraße I found my attention instantly propelled towards a white and green logo hanging just around the corner. One look at the whimsical wayfarer-wearing deer poised over the promise of Frühstück, Café & Snacks and I absolutely knew that though I couldn’t stop then, I had to come back. I did; it was a cold day of persistent light rain—the kind that sinks through your bones and lands on your soul— but I grabbed my umbrella and braved the walk regardless. This decision was one that certainly saved a dreary day.

Bio Rührer Ei

Heimatliebe is one of those ultra-small, modern Cafés that have been popping up all over the city. The philosophy is simple: Quality, Affordability, and Consciousness. Whenever possible, ingredients are bio and regional. In many ways, it caters to the modern sensibly for care and comfort. In this respect, the food is very much as if it were out of your own kitchen with portions to match (read: hefty) and price tags to exalt over. Seriously, the price-portion ratio is astonishing.

Brot Belegt mit Liebe: Frischkäse, Avocado & Ei

Though I visited for breakfast (I can’t help it, I love breakfast) Heimatliebe is there for you all day and through every meal. With a small selection of homey classics it’s clear that Alex and Daniel’s goal is to share what they themselves love. That they sometimes shower their food in petals is symbolic enough.

Milchreis mit Zimt & Zucker

Breakfast offers the standard choice of eggs, bread, coffee, and sweets. This includes a delightfully sweet and velvety (never too-thick) cinnamon Milchreis (rice pudding) so similar to my grandma’s Arroz con Leche that it nearly brought me to tears. Lunch is confined to the dish/soup of the day and salad (or detox water if you’re feeling extra healthy); these are posted daily of IG and FB. In a classical German fashion, the afternoon is all about that snack life with pizzas and Brotzeit (bread, cold cuts, cheese). As far as drinks are concerned, the coffee is emilo, the beer is Giesinger (what else?) and there are certainly enough wines, spritzes, and nonalcoholic variations to choose from.

Fridays are when the hair comes down and the suits fall off. The last day of the week is the only day of the week when Heimatliebe forgoes its usual closing time of 6 pm and stays open until 10 pm. Friday’s at Heimatliebe are #betreutestrinken time with 5 euro Gin & Tonics.

So, if you’re looking for a snug and unaffected café in the OG to fit all your daytime nourishment needs or somewhere to let loose after work, Heimatliebe is kind of like your living room, but a thousand times better.

As usual, let me know if you make it there and what you think of Heimatliebe the next time you’re in Giesing. I personally can’t wait to test it out for beyond breakfast or a Friyay snack. They had my attention when they promised breakfast, but the moment they added Gin & Tonic they truly won my  heart.
